Diabetes: Types and Treatments
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic illness which can affect the entire body, in which the body isn’t able to make proper use of glucose and the result is high blood sugar. Factors which are responsible for causing diabetes can be overeating heavy foods, excessive sleep, no workout schedule, mental stress and strain, high intake of protein and fats. Ayurveda for diabetes says that it requires daily self-care and if complications develop, can have a significant impact on quality of life and can reduce life expectancy. While there is currently no cure for diabetes, you can live an enjoyable life by learning about the condition and how to manage it.
Type I: First type is also known as Juvenile diabetes, this type occurs when the body fails to produce insulin. The reason behind this type is when the immune system destroys cells in the pancreas. People with this type are insulin-dependent, which means they must have to take artificial insulin daily to stay alive. Insulin is a hormone, works as a fuel for cells that helps move sugar or glucose into human body’s tissues.
Type 2 : This type affects the way the body uses insulin. While the body still makes insulin, the cells in the body do not respond to it effectively. This is the most common type. According to the National Institute of Diabetes, it has strong links with obesity. Factors of causing type 2 is drinking soda, consuming too much of sugar and processed food, lack of activity. And it can also be genetic.
Gestational diabetes: This type occurs in women during pregnancy when the body becomes less sensitive to insulin. During Pregnancy, if the placenta doesn’t make enough hormones that leads to buildup glucose in the lady’s body, then it can cause Gestational diabetes. It does not occur in all women and usually resolves after giving birth.
Ayurveda for Diabetes: Home Remedies
In Ayurveda, diabetes is referred to as ‘Madhumeh‘. And as part of its treatment, one should avoid excess intake of sweets and simple carbohydrates. It is obligatory to include more green and leafy vegetables in your diet. Use garlic, Onion, bitter gourd (karela), spinach, raw banana and black plum. Some bitter and healthy herbs like aloe-vera consider as the best medicine in managing diabetes. You should avoid excessive sweet, salty and sour food items, avoid fruits like mangoes, pineapple, grapes. Start doing some work-out and stop sleeping in daytime. Neem: The Neem plant or Azadirachta Indica is considered as the best Ayurvedic herb for treating diabetes because of its bitterness in its leaves and flower. The practitioners use it alone or combined with other anti-diabetic Ayurvedic herbs for improving glucose tolerance.
Fenugreek Seeds: Diabetics should definitely have a stock of Fenugreek (Methi Dana) in their homes because it reduces the insulin resistance in the body. Regular consumption of Fenugreek seeds of about 1 gm per day can reduce the blood glucose level within 2 months. You can consume Methi Dana every morning soaked in water overnight.
Ginger: Ginger tea helps stimulate digestion that is beneficial in reducing the excess Kapha in your system. To reduce Kapha, you should follow the Kapha-pacifying diet, especially avoiding excess intake of sweets, carbohydrates, and dairy products. So take more fresh vegetables and bitter herbs.
Turmeric:Increasing the intake of turmeric in your diet can also beneficial in diabetes management.
Drinking water in copper vessel
Drinking water from the copper vessel is very healthy action for the overall functioning of the body. Taking this step in your schedule may help prevent fluctuation of blood sugar levels. Put one cup of water into a copper vessel at night and drink it in the morning in empty stomach.
